Titanfall Review: Will The Score Have A Say In Pushing Xbox One Units?

Jitanfall will be released on march 11and in North America, that is to say in less than two days. While there may be occasional early gamers here and there, this will mark the opening of the floodgates for gamers everywhere. Since its debut at E3 2013, Titanfall has made quite an impression on the industry. The concept felt new and yet so familiar, the movement and the giant robots feeling almost too fluid to be real.

It wasn’t until the recent beta that we realized that was the case. Titanfall was everything we could be and more. It not only showed its strengths, but proved that they were nothing but second nature – it was the tight map design, the overall structure of the fight, the balancing of Titans vs. pilots and overall showcasing your skills in these settings.

However, Titanfall has come under intense scrutiny for one reason or another. It is believed that the 12 player cap is ultimately a hindrance to the experience and having bots makes the first person shooter look stupid. There were criticisms of the lack of environmental destruction, particularly in the sense that giant robots should be able to easily shoot through walls with their giant guns to take out pilots. The reason this was ultimately ignored was obvious in regards to game balance.

But that’s not all. Why did Titanfall opt for a purely multiplayer experience? Why was it only released for Xbox platforms? How would it compete with Battlefield and Call of Duty? Would it live up to the massive expectations of its creators, the founding men of Respawn Entertainment having been the architects of Medal of Honor and then Call of Duty? While many of these issues have been somewhat resolved with the recent beta, there are still plenty of factors to consider with the release of Titanfall.

For example, while Sony will have inFamous: Second Son and DriveClub in the coming months and has overtaken Microsoft in next-gen console sales with the PS4, Microsoft only has Titanfall to boost Xbox sales. One. We haven’t heard from Sunset Overdrive and Halo yet, and Gears of War is still a long way off. But Titanfall isn’t just one of the greatest exclusives currently available, it’s also one of the greatest multiplayer games of all time.

That being said, what is it about the game that seems so worthy of critical acclaim? Put everything else aside – what exactly is Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall? Why is this so important?

It might just be fun.

It caters to a long-lost gaming nerd subculture without losing sight of the mainstream. In fact, it shows those of us who don’t dabble in video games or just stick with single-player titles or hate first-person shooters why the genre is so cool. Titanfall is cool. It’s serious, it’s played straight but it’s so much fun and so cool to play. It’s that classic case of being so simple yet so complex to understand.

You don’t even have to be hyper-skilled to enjoy it – either become more adept at using your Titan or become a hardcore pilot skilled in close quarters combat. Maybe you just want to stick with the smart gun and capture points for your team. Maybe you just want to run around with a shotgun. Heck, maybe you just want to feel powerful and incredibly awesome – Titanfall caters to all of those quirks.

This is probably why the beta managed to attract 2 million unique users. This is probably why most players, like Call of Duty and Battlefield, will ignore the reviews and just dive into the experience without caring about the critical response. That’s why they will accept the so-called “limitations” of the game and just enjoy it because it’s a fun and awesome new experience to play.

It might be the most critically acclaimed multiplayer title in a long time, even by the usual standards by which first-person shooters are judged. Either way, it’s going to be one of the most memorable games of the year, if not the decade. If that’s not enough to increase Xbox One unit sales, what is?
