Third stellar journey for the Galaxian franchise.

Many video game fans are familiar with Namco’s classic shmup Galaxianknow more about its legendary sequel Galaga, but far fewer people refer to Space Shmup’s second sequel, Gaplus. Well, the rebirth is here, as the formative shmup has joined the ranks of Hamster’s arcade archive on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Released in arcades in 1984, and lost in the quagmire of Video Game Crash, Gaplus retains the vertically scrolling shmup action of its predecessor, but introduces an all-new scoring system as well as a selection of cool power-ups and alternate weapons. As the player guides a brave ship and shoots down waves of enemies, they can collect flags for score bonuses and unleash a powerful arsenal of pickups, including a tractor beam and a massive drill-like appendage.

While Gaplus was well received by critics and enjoyed some success in Japan, the Western release suffered due to the wave of arcade center closures and a general move towards home play. In North America, Gaplus has been renamed Galaga 3 in an effort to draw more attention to his legacy. Gaplus would not receive many docking ports, although a version was released for the Commodore 64. The arcade edition would not receive an official docking port until re-released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2009.

Gaplus is available to download now on PS4 and Nintendo Switch, priced around $8.
