It’s been a long time since we’ve seen the fatal frame franchise, more than half a decade in fact, but it will return later this year with a re-release of Fatal Frame: The Black Water Maiden. The game was originally released for the Wii U and was the last new title in the franchise. It’s going to take on new life now, and the show’s producer hopes that won’t be the only novelty that will come out of it.

Speaking to Famitsu (and as transcribed and translated by the folks at Nintendo Everything), Keisuke Kikuchi talked about the upcoming remaster. Kikuchi served as producer on the entire series, and he expressed hope that Damsel of Black Water enough to spark interest in a new game. More specifically, he said, “That’s what I’m hoping for. We are releasing this game to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series, and we hope that many fans will take the opportunity to play the game. We would like this to lead to a new title.

Fatal Frame: The Black Water MaidenThe re-release of will be the first title in the franchise not to be exclusive to Nintendo hardware since 2008, when the franchise went under the company’s publishing with Fatal Frame: Lunar Eclipse Mask, a game that was never localized outside of Japan. In the past, Kikuchi has said that a new game in the series belongs to Nintendo, but with the new cross-platform release, it’s unclear what the relationship looks like now and how much Nintendo will need to be involved in a potential new title. Damsel of Black Water is set to release on October 28 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
